(Ipswich gig review)

Freedom is the essence of Marcelle's DJ-style. The Dutch DJane doesn't limit herself to a specific type of music. What makes her stand out - aside from her comprehensive music knowledge (she owns an extensive collection of around 15,000 records and never uses anything but vinyl for her live shows) - is the uniqueness of her mixes.
Marcelle is eclectic and full of surprises. On her second longplayer, "DJ Marcelle / Another Nice Mess Meets More Soulmates At Faust Studio Deejay Laboratory", she mixes African rhythms with the sounds of Czechoslovakian mass demonstrations, Dubstep with experimental Electronica, Dub with steam engines, accordion playing with Breakcore, and Minimal with safari voices, making it seem - after the first moments of surprise – as if these diverse sounds had always belonged together. The listener will not be just entertained, but will be made part of a huge adventure. You just can't stop dancing to this lively and innovative mix.
Marcelle has already enchanted her audience in cities like London, Berlin, Vienna, Amsterdam, New York, Bratislava, Brussels and Paris. She is a resident DJane in three big German cities, and also plays clubs, galleries, African festivals, or auditoriums. And she's open for a good deal more. ''She transforms everyone's idea of how to dance and feel great'', was written about her in New York.
Because of her open method of working, she has already collaborated with all sorts of musicians - including modern dance performers, hip-hop and reggae MCs, and jazz musicians. At the last Klangbad festival, she played a spontaneous set with one of Jimi Tenor's trumpet players. In addition she is currently forming a duet named „Fodderstompf“ with the percussionist Holger Mertin from Cologne.
Marcelle has regular radio shows in three countries: The Netherlands, Germany, and the UK. Slovakian National Radio has recently shown some interest as well. Her shows are listened to throughout the entire world!
Her new record is the successor of the 2008 release, 'DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess Meets Her Soulmates At Faust Studio Deejay Laboratory', which is already sold out in the meantime. The titles of her releases are an hommage to the dub records Marcelle bought excessively back in the late 70s and 80s – like, for example, 'Rockers Meets King Tubbys In A Fire House'. On her new double-vinyl release, Marcelle mixes and manipulates some 50 pieces of music (mostly records) within 78 minutes, in four subject areas, called “The Donau Mix”, “The Adventurous Mix”, “The Safari Mix” and finally – not without self irony – “The Perfect Mix”.
Let DJane Marcelle take you on a journey that you can't imagine unless you experience it yourself!

Hans Joachim Irmler (Faust / Klangbad) about Marcelle:
DJ is an abbreviation; disc jockey is a profession. A mission for some. Someone who plays canned music. The DJ’s creative input is an oblique one - mostly about selection and compiling. But since the arrival of hip hop, scratching and speed/pitch control, DJing has changed significantly. Equipped with a mixer and at least a second turntable, the DJ directly intervenes and then becomes the musical director of his record collection.
DJ Marcelle is also DJ in this sense of the word. She mixes records. But what singles her out from the masses is her exceptional devotion and sensitivity while doing so. She creates transitions that you don’t even recognize as such. One thing positively floats into the next. A rare talent, that reveals its full beauty when Marcelle intertwines two, three different tracks simultaneously; more or less stacking music live and in the moment of the set. A continuous flow of improvisation and structure.
This requires an extraordinary knowledge of the music itself and extreme sensitivity. HERE is where Marcelle distinguishes herself from most of the other DJs I’ve met in the past. THIS is what makes her exceptional. With her, competence becomes art. Something totally new is created.
DJ Marcelle is a musician.
It’s great to know that she is out there!
